World Asthma Day
This year’s World Asthma Day takes place on 5 May – an international day of action to raise awareness of this widespread chronic respiratory condition. In Switzerland, 8–9 per cent of children and around 5 per cent of adults are affected by asthma.
Dust mite-proof bedding covers, known as encasings, can protect children with asthma who also suffer from a dust mite allergy from severe attacks. This is the conclusion of a British study*.
The researchers conducted a study of children and adolescents aged 3 to 17 with asthma and a concurrent dust mite allergy. Their hypothesis: reducing the concentration of mite allergens would also reduce the number of severe asthma attacks. Therefore, 123 of the 286 children slept in mite-proof duvet covers for a year, while the 118 children in the control group slept in covers that looked identical but lacked mite-repellent properties. The results were clear: dust samples showed that the concentration of mite allergens in the first group fell by 84 per cent. Compared to the placebo group, these children were also 45 per cent less likely to be hospitalised for an asthma attack.

A sensible measure
The mite-proof encasings have high air and water vapour permeability, are hard-wearing, easy to care for and hygienically washable at 60°C to 95°C. A selection carries the Allergy Seal of Quality.

Grass pollen is in the air – the peak season for pollen allergy starts
Grass pollen is the most common trigger for pollen allergy (hay fever). One in five people in Switzerland suffers from a pollen allergy, and 70% of them react to grass pollen. Products with the Allergy Quality Seal, such as pollen screens or air filters, help to reduce pollen concentrations indoors. You can find certified products here.
The grass pollen season lasts until the end of summer and peaks between mid-May and June.
